Mental Health Disorders on the Rise Among Young Adults
Even before COVID-19 was a thing and our world changed, the mental health crisis was on the rise among young adults. And a global pandemic didn’t do anything to stem that tide … in fact it just made things worse.
Life for a young adult can be exciting … and scary. Kind of like a rollercoaster. One minute you’re full of excitement and anticipation about the future and all the wonders it holds. And the next minute you’re holding on for dear life as the bottom drops out on you.
Young adulthood is a time in a person’s life marked by changes and growth all around … physically, mentally, and emotionally. It is also a period that mental health disorders can occur – illnesses that can impact the life of the individual for years to come.
The most common mental health issues for young adults are depression, anxiety, personality disorders, and behavioral disorders.
According to NIMH, nearly 30% of young adults aged 18-25 have some mental health illness. And mental health issues are more prevalent for females with nearly 25% having a mental health issue, compared to just over 16% for males.
The important thing to know is no matter how you’re feeling or what you’re feeling you’re not alone and help is available to you.
You wouldn’t try setting your own broken leg if you could help it, right?
